Kalsarp Yoga

Rahu and Ketu are two modes of Moon and they are regarded as full-fledged planets in Astrology. They are considered as most dreaded planets. Rahu is the Dragon's head and Ketu as Dragon's tail. Both of them form a malefic yoga, known as Kal-Sarp Yoga. In Astrology, this Yoga is supposed to have direct impact on the following events :
  • It causes deterioration of health and reduces longevity.
  • It causes imprisonment or serious accident.
  • It causes separation, divorce and marital discord.
  • It causes poverty and destruction of wealth.
  • It causes destruction of business and loss of job.
  • It causes destruction of kingdoms and rulers.
  • It causes downfall of most powerful persons in politics.
Formation of Kalsarp Yoga :
  • All the planets should be within the orbit of Rahu and Ketu.
  • Rahu should be at the upper end and ketu at the lower end.
  • There is no planet outside the arch.
  • That there is no planet conjuncting with Rahu or Ketu.
  • That all the seven planets should face Rahu, which is always retrograde.
Impact of Kal-Sarp Yoga :
  • Rahu in first house and Ketu in 7th house: Downfall, loss of position and reputation, mishappening, marital discord, loss of wife and children.
  • Rahu in second house and Ketu in 8th house : Reduction in wealth and health causes poverty, worries defects in body and lot of travelling.
  • Rahu in 3rd house and Ketu in 9th house : Involved in criminal activities, unpopular, waste energy and wealth, selfish, accident prone and paralysis is possible.
  • Rahu in 4th house and Ketu in 10th house : Loss of property, disappoint-ment, loss of job and business, unhappiness, sarpdosha unhappy and unsettled life.
  • Rahu in 5th and Ketu in 11th house : Heavy losses in litigation, failure in love affair, loss of children and betrayal by friends.
  • Rahu in 6th house and Ketu in 12th house : imprisonment, secret enemies, bad health and serious sickness and set backs in married life.
Note : The impact is more severe if Rahu has support of Sun and Saturn.
Duration of Kal-Sarpn Yoga :
  • Rahu in 1st house: upto 27 years of age.
  • Rahu in 2nd house: upto 33 years of age.
  • Rahu in 3rd house: upto 36 years of age.
  • Rahu in 4th house: upto 42 years of age.
  • Rahu in 5th house: upto 48 years of age.
  • Rahu in 6th house: upto 54 years of age.
Notes :
  • It causes malefic impact on houses occupied by Rahu and Ketu.
  • It causes malefic impact on houses aspected by Rahu and ketu.
  • It spoils the benefic planets joining with Rahu and Ketu.
  • It causes severe hardship when related with Sun and Saturn or the lords of the houses occupied by Sun, Saturn,Rahu and Ketu.
  • Its impact will be clearly noticed during periods and interperiods of Rahu and Ketu.
  • Its impact is more severe when Rahu/Ketu are in 1,5 or 9th position from themselves or Sun, Mars and Saturn.
  • Sometimes it pushes a man to great heights..
  • Sometimes it gives benefic results, when Rahu/Ketu are aspected by benefic planets, specially Jupiter or Venus.
  • Ketu is always 180 degrees from the longitude of Rahu
  • In case Uranus, Neptune or Pluto are outside the arch of Rahu and Ketu, no Kal-Sarp Yoga is formed.
  • Ketu's aspect is less malefic than Rahu
  • Raja Yogas in the chart are more effective than Kal-Sarp Yoga
  • This Yoga causes great harm to th4e family, society and nation through the person who has Kal-Sarp Yoga
  • This Yoga plays important role in Mundane Astrology
  • Rahu joining ninth Mars in any chart create criminals or suicide or serious accident or murder
  • Rahu and Saturn joining in any house destroy the 7th house, the house opposite them
  • Rahu in transit creating relations with Jupiter or Venus gives benefic results
  • Ketu moving over any planet is evil for the significations of the concerned house
  • Rahu and Ketu generally behaves like lord of the sign occupied by them or the planet conjuncting with them.
  • If Ascendant is outside the arch of Kal-Sarp Yoga, the malefic impact is reduced.
  • The dispositors of Rahu and Ketu also play important role in determining the benefic or malefic impact.
  • Rahu in 3rd or 6th house in Aries, Taurus or Cancer sign does not give malefic results. It is benefic and gives benefic results.
  • Rahu in 10th house or aspecting 10th house and its lord along with Sun and Saturn destroy the native's career. In case of 7th house separation and divorce id possible
  • Rahu and Mars in 3rd house causes accident and damages to life.
  • Rahu + Mars + Sat in ascendant: Dangerous personality.

Your Dasha Calculation

In Astrology it is understood that at any point of time nature is governed by a planet and the position of that planet in the horoscope determines how the native will feel or behave. This chapter details the calculation of the planet acting at any point of time and the period for which the planet rules.
To predict the past present and future, saints evolved the system of "Dasha" or period. Any planet influences someone more than others at some point of time, than the other planet takes over and so on.
Many dasha systems have been described as many as 42. but the most common and -popular dasha system is "Vimshottari". As the name suggests, the complete cycle of dasha is of 120 years. All the nine planets take part in this system. The periods and the constellation assigned to them is as follows:
Table 1
Planet Constellation Year
Sun Krittika, U. phalguni, Uttarashada 6
Moon Rohini, Hasta, Shravana  10
Mars Mrigshira, Chitra, Dhanistha 7
Rahu Ardra, Swati, Satbhisha  18
Jupiter Punarvasu, Vishakha, P. bhadrapada 16
Saturn Pushya, Anuradha, U. bhadrapada 19
Mercury Ashlesha, jyestha, Revati 17
Ketu Magha, Mool, Ashwin 7
Venus P. phalugni, Purva Ashada, Bharani 20
At the time of birth of the native, the constellation occupied by the Moon determines which planet will rule at that time. The fraction of the constellation balance at that time determines the "balance of dasha", that is the time period for which the planet will rule after birth. After the end of the ruling period of that planet, other planets rule one by one in the cyclic order as listed in table 1.
Let us understand it by an example. In the model horoscope in the previous issue, we have date of birth 15-1-1970, time 4.30 A.M. and place of birth Delhi. on this date and time Moon's degree is Aries 90 36' , that is, it is in Ashwini nakshatra. Ashwini starts at 00 Aries and extends upto 13020' Of Aries. This way moon has crossed 90 36' of Aries and has 130 20' - 90 36' = 30 44' still to go. From table-I we find Ashwini is represented by Ketu having a period of 7 years. Hence the native was born when ketu was ruling and it had a balance of dasa.
30 44' x 7 years = 1.96 years
130 20' = 1 year 16 months 16 days
Adding this period to date of birth, we get ( 15 - 1 - 1970 ) + ( 16 - 11 - 1 ) = ( 1 - 1 - 1972 )
i.e. the native experienced influence of Ketu for 1 year 16 months 16 days from birth till 1 Jan. 1972. Thereafter, according to table 1, was under the influence of Venus for 20 years upto 1-1-1992; followed by Sun for 6 years upto 1-1-1998, then by Moon for 10 years 1-1-2008 and so on.
Note that the period of 1 year 11 months 16 days is called the balance of 7 years of ketu 20 years of Venus etc. are called dasha periods.
Thus we compute the dasha periods for nature as follows :
Balance of dasha : 1 year 11 months 16 days, of Ketu.
Date Of Birth 15        -        1        -        1970

Balance of Ketu 16        -       11        -        1
  1        -        1        -        1972
Venus 20
  1        -        1        -        1992
Sun 6
  1        -        1        -        1998
Moon 10
  1        -        1        -        2008
Mars 7
  1        -        1        -        2015
Rahu 18
  1        -        1        -        2033
Jupiter 16
  1        -        1        -        2049
Saturn 19
  1        -        1        -        2068
Mercury 17
  1        -        1        -        2085
No one will be satisfied if we tell him how he will go through his next 10 or 20 years in nut shell. He would want to know the effects of events in detail. So the above dashas are further subdivided into sub periods or Antar dashas. During the planet's dasha, antar dasha starts from planet itself, followed by the same sequence as given in table I. The period is also subdivided into the same fractions as assigned in table No. 1. In brief sun rules for 6 years. Sun will have its own sub period first for 6x6/120 = 36/120 years = (36 x 12)/120 = 3 months 18 days
After this will come Moon's sub period. Moon represents 10 years out of total span of 120 years of Vimshottari dasa. So it will rule for 1/12th part of the total period of 6 years of Sun .
Thus Moon will have sub period of 6 x 10/120 = ½ = 6 months
In a similar manner we can compute sub periods of all the planets while major influence of other planet is there.

To compute the table 2, the basic formula is :
Sub period of a planet = (period of major planet x period of sub planet/120 years.)

Since 1 year contains 12 months, the above formula reduces to
Sub period = (period of major planet x period of sub planet/10) in months.
We multiply the two periods and put a decimal after one digit from the right. The whole number so obtained gives in the months for the antar dasha and the traditional part multiplied by 3 gives the number of days for of the sub period.
Sun's sub period in Maha dasha of Sun will be 6 x 6 = 36 putting decimal It is 3.6 months.
By multiplying decimal part by 3 we get 3.6 x 3 = 3 months 18 days
Sub-Sub Periods : For further refining the results, we can divide the sub periods into sub-sub periods (Pratyantar Dasha) and sub-sub-sub periods (Sookshma Dasha) or even further adopting the same procedure as for sub period. The formula for sub-sub period will be :
Sub-sub period = (Period of major (Pratyantar Dasha) planet x period of sub planet x period of sub-sub planet) /(120x120) years = (Period of major planet x period of sub planet x period of sub-sub planet) / 1200 months
Sub-sub-sub period = (Period of major (Sookshma Dasha) planet x period of sub planet x period of sub-sub planet x period of sub-sub-sub planet)/(120x120x120) years. = (Period of major planet x period of sub planet x period of sub-sub planet x period of sub-sub-sub planet)/ (1200x120) months. = (Period of major planet x period of sub planet x period of sub-sub planet x period of sub-sub-sub planet)/ 40 days
The smallest sub-sub-sub period is of Sun-Sun-Sun -Sun, which is (6 x 6 x 6 x 6)/400 If we go one step deep we get Prana dasha of Sun-Sun-Sun-Sun-Sun = 3.24 x 6 = .162 days = 4 hours. only 120
Though mathematically it seems to be viable to go even further down the step, however these, calculation is highly susceptible to errors because of inherent errors in time of birth and we do not suggest at all to go beyond 5 levels. Even 5th level is normally inaccurate enough to make it absurd. 1 minute of time causes 30" = 1/2 of error in Moon. This shifts the dasha of sun by
( 6 years x 365 days x 24 hours 1) / ( 130 201 x 60 2 ) = 33 hours
Whereas the entire pran dasha of Sun is only x 4 hours, the difference of 33 hours further gets amplified to 110 hours, that is 5 days if the Moon is in the constellation of Venus at the time of birth.
Note : While computing dasha dates we add days to days, months to months and years to years. If days are more than 30, we take a carry over of 1 to months and similarly if months are more than 12 we take a carry over of 1 to year. Here we do not take into account the actual number. of days in a month.
It seems that we are taking a year as 360 days only - 12 months x 30 days per month. However, this is a wrong understanding. Actually, we are dividing the year into months by multiplying by 12 and further converting into days by multiplying of 30. we add up in the same manner. So it is not correct to add by taking actual days of months into consideration. This simplicity of calculation takes the year as 365.25 days. The actual dates computed by rigorous calculations by taking actual days of the months and by this simple method differ only by a few days; accurate practically for all astrological purposes.
For a thought : There are many inherent problems with dasha calculation. Dasha changes very fast with the absolute value of Moon's position. It does not depend upon any other value and doubt in the value of ayanamsa makes it almost useless. Secondly, there are so many dasha systems and it is not known which dasha should be applied when. Thirdly, the periods assigned to different planets seem to be quite adhoc and no reasoning is available anywhere. This makes the dasha system very doubtful and the transit of planets seems to give a much better method of timing an event. Yet, it is difficult to deny the system of dasha. often it seems to be giving results with undoubted accuracy.

The effects gems will have depends on the nature of their Planet lord’s attitude or placement in each individual horoscope.  There are two types of planets in every horoscope, viz., ANUKUL-GRAHA or favorable planets, and PRATIKUL-GRAHA or unfavorable planets. Gems will act accordingly. If (for example) Surya (Sun) is well-placed in your horoscope then Sun's gem, ruby, will also act well; but if Sun is ill-placed in your chart then the Sun's gem will also be unfavorable. Below are simple basic guidelines on how fine quality jyotish gems might influence us.

1. Influence of Ruby / red spinel ---If Sun is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward:  Nobility, dignity, power, leadership, confidence, one will be well-read, pious, strong, compassionate and untroubled.
---If Sun is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: No self esteem, no energy, no confidence, bucking authority, contrary results may be expected.

2. Influence of (natural) Pearl / moonstone ---If Moon is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Good sensitivity, good habits, stability, health, one will be wealthy, industrious and respected.
---If Moon is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Over reacting, depressed, overly sensitive, stressed, contrary results may be expected.

3. Influence of Yellow Sapphire / yellow topaz ---If Jupiter is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward:: Humanitarian, caring, spiritual, optimism, faith, good judgment, one will be a leader of men, powerful, respected, although susceptible to anger.
---If Jupiter is ill-placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Greedy, uncaring, selfishness, too pragmatic, negative outlook,  personal unhappiness, egotism, sloth, and legal problems.

4. Influence of Hessonite / orange zircon ---If Rahu is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Originality, inspiration, insight, uniqueness, exotic, wealthy and fortunate.
---If Rahu is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Mental disease, addiction, illusion, volatile-nature, trouble, a tendency to suffer from fear of supernatural phenomena and suicidal impulses.

5. Influence of Emerald / tsavorite ---If Mercury is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Rational, witty, skill, dexterity, worldly-brains, one will be educated, happy, fortunate and highly respected.
---If Mercury is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Aloof, lack of concentration, difficulty with communications, slow, one becomes prone to speech and hearing impediments, deceptive behavior, and lack of vitality.

6. Influence of Diamond / colorless quartz ---If Venus is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Attractiveness, refinement, grace, elegance, smooth, one will be humanitarian, long-lived and possess many good qualities.
---If Venus is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Vanity, lewdness, sensual corruption, lack of taste and refinement, one becomes vulnerable to loss of libido, impotence and sterility, venereal (lit. of Venus) complaints, and rapid aging.

7. Influence of Chrysoberyl Cat's Eye / fibrolite cat’s eye ---If Ketu is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Spiritualism, intuition, universality, subtleness, sensitivity, one will be  wealthy and protected from evil.
---If Ketu is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Eccentricity, explosiveness, fanaticism, emotional problems,  one becomes prone to fatal diseases of a mysterious nature as well as  compulsive gambling.

8. Influence of Blue Sapphire / indicolite (sapphire-blue tourmaline) ---If Saturn is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Discipline, responsibility, realism, durability, humility, one will be long-lived, charitable, lavish, proficient and an affectionate mate.
---If Saturn is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Depression, anxiety, fear, loneliness, disappointment, one becomes vulnerable to headaches, neuralgia, and other disorders of the nervous system, as well as epilepsy, stupidity, and fainting.

9. Influence of Red Coral / red carnelian ---If Mars is well placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Positive energy, strength, courage, passion, active, one has great energy, is learned, well-known and regal.
---If Mars is ill placed in your horoscope the influence will be toward: Anger, irritable, over reactive, impatience, aggression, one becomes prone to boils (due to impure blood), unstable blood pressure, anemia, and violence.

TEN PRIMARY GEM CHOOSING METHODS
compiled by Richard S. Brown
After a lot of interaction with different members of the PGA we have identified TEN PRIMARY GEM CHOOSING METHODS:
1) Lagna Lord's gem method for improving health (Example: If Lagna is Leo, a sign ruled by Sun, the gem would be ruby or other Sun gems like red spinel or red garnet),
---Yes if the planet is located in a 'good' (strong) position, otherwise not.

---Yes even if the planet is located in a 'bad' (weak) position.
2) Moon Rasi Lord's gem method (Example: If Moon is in Virgo, a sign ruled by Mercury, then the gem would be emerald or another Mercury gem like tsavorite or green tourmaline);
---Yes if the planet is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.

---Yes even if the planet is located in a 'bad' position.
3) Maha-dasha Lord's gem method for ...
a. Overcoming bad Dasha periods, or

b. Boosting good Dasha periods

(Example: If one is in a Mars Mahadasha or Bhukti then red coral or another Mars gem like red carnelian should be worn),

---Yes if the planet is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.

---Yes even if the planet is located in a 'bad' position.
4) Weak Planet's gem method for overcoming a weak planet based on the concept that a 'weak' (inauspicious) planet is strengthened by wearing it's gem and there by it changes from being inauspicious (weak) to become auspicious (strong). Example: A person has Jupiter debilitated (0% power) which is inauspicious, but by wearing yellow sapphire or another yellow Jupiter jewel, it is believed that the 'weak' (troublesome) Jupiter gets strengthened and becomes auspicious.
5) Strong Planet's gem method for resorting to one's strong auspicious planet(s) (exalted, mulatrikona, own sign, great friend, etc.) based on the concept that lucky planet = luck gem! One should avoid their 'weakness and cultivate their strength. Most auspicious gem of strongest most desirable planet. Example: One has Leo Lagna and their lagna-lord is Sun, who is exalted (100% strength) and posited in the 9th house which is all very auspicious. That person would be advised to use a fine ruby, the Sun’s gem, to attract or harness his auspicious influence. On the other hand if the same person had Saturn debilitated (0% strength) and in the 8th house they would be advised to avoid Saturn’s gem blue sapphire and all other Saturnine things or activities. And better still they could donate a blue sapphire to pacify Shanideva.
6) Fadic number method - Use Fadic number planet's gem for general luck. (Example: If birth date is 1+13+1966 (1+1+3+1+9+6+6) equals T: 36 = T: 9 = cosmic number for Mars (red coral).
7) Gem of 11th lord method - Eleventh lord's gem is to be worn for gains:
---Yes if the 11th Lord (planet) is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.

---Yes even if the 11th Lord (planet) is located in a 'bad' position.
8) Gem of 10th lord method for strengthening one's profession:
---Yes if the 10th Lord (planet) is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.

---Yes even if the 10th Lord (planet) is located in a 'bad' position.
9) Gem of 9th lord method for improving fortune, happiness
---Yes if the 9th Lord (planet) is located in a 'good' position, otherwise not.

---Yes even if the 9th Lord (planet) is located in a 'bad' position.
10) Gem donation method. It is taught that if a person has a very weak and inauspicious planet causing them harm, this harmful influence can be mitigated by pacifying the harmful planet (Graha-deva) through a sacrifice by donating a gem for the harmful planet to a specified recipient. Example: A person who has Rahu posited in a harmful (weak) position and is in a troublesome Rahu Maha-Dasha would be advised to donate a hessonite or another Rahu gem to a leper on Saturday evening during the waxing Moon.

As the Sun is incompatible with Saturn, Venus, Rahu and Ketu, Sun gems such as ruby should not be used with blue sapphire, diamond, hessonite or cat's eye.
As the Moon is incompatible with Rahu and Ketu, Moon gems such as pearl should not be used with hessonite or cat's-eye.
As Jupiter is incompatible with Mercury and Venus, Jupiter gems such as yellow sapphire should not be used with emerald or diamond.
As Rahu (Moon’s north node) is incompatible with Sun and Moon, Rahu gems such as hessonite should not be used with ruby or pearl.
As Mercury is incompatible with the Moon, Mercury gems such as emerald should not be used with pearl or moonstone.
As Venus is incompatible with the Sun and Moon, diamonds and other colorless gems should not be used with rubies or pearls.
As Ketu (Moon’s south node) is incompatible with Sun and Moon, cat's eye gems should not be used with rubies or pearls.
As Saturn is incompatible with Sun, Moon and Mars, Saturn gems such as blue sapphire should not be used with ruby, pearl or red coral.
As Mars is incompatible with Mercury and Saturn , Mars gems like red coral should not be used with emerald or blue sapphires.
