Most of us know about Pythagoras as a mathematician who developed a theorem in Geometry which states that in a right angled triangle, the sum of squares of the adjacent two sides will be equal to the square of its hypotenuse. But many of us do not know the other side of Pythagoras. Born in 570 BC in Samos, Pythagoras was an Astrologer, Numerologist, Musician and a spiritual Guru. He was able to communicate with Siddhas (enlightened souls) and went back into his past births and visualized his ninety nine thousand past lives in a row. He was able to predict earthquakes and calm the waves of the seas and rivers while travelling on. He healed several people with his music by playing lyre. After getting enlightenment, he started his own school where he used to teach Numerology and philosophy to his students. While initiating his students, he used to give a secret mantra (sacred sound) to his disciple.


Pythagoras believed that every planet had a peculiar sound of its own. He represented this sound using numbers. He felt that numbers can be classified as having male or female qualities, introvert or extrovert nature, beautiful or ugly etc. He also mentioned that some numbers carry karmic debts, i.e. the results of bad actions done in previous births, into the present lives of the people. Plato followed Pythagoras philosophy. Iamblichus gathered his verses and Thomas Taylor translated them from the Greek.


Pythagoras assigned a particular number to each alphabet in the natural way from 1 to 9. Apart from 1 to 9 digits, he considers 11 and 22 as master numbers. 11 and 22 represent the force of karma (past actions) which leads the person into success or failure in this life. Also, every number will have positive and negative qualities. For example, the right hand side table shows how the alphabets are numbered in Pythagorean Numerology.

According to Pythagoras, the entire destiny of a person would be decided primarily by the numbers involved in his date of birth and name. The following are the important numbers in the life of a person, as calculated by Pythagoras system of Numerology.

Destiny number or Expression number: Destiny number or expression number represents the environment and opportunities that the person will come across in this life. It is the goal to be reached. It is the sum of numerical values of all the letters in the full name of the person. While calculating destiny number, we should find the sum of numbers of each word in the name and reduce them to a single digit or master number. Then they should be added further to form a single digit or master number. Let us take an example. Mother Teresa born on 26th August 1910. Her full name at birth is: Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu. Till her middle age, she was called with this name. After her 36th year of age, she was called ‘Mother Teresa’.

Now the destiny number is 1+6+9 = 16 = 7. Please note that ‘Agnes’ gives 19 which is a karmic number. This number represents struggle for freedom from the circumstances. ‘Gonxha’ has 33 which represents teaching and self sacrifice for the welfare of others. ‘Bojaxhiu’ has 36 that represents travel, creativity and humanitarianism. The final destiny number is 16 which is a karmic number that represents failures in marriage and business. This number gives 7 (i.e. 1+6) which represents spiritualism. These numbers indicate that Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu will be forced to attain freedom by sacrificing her life for the welfare of mankind on humanitarian grounds. With this goal, she came to India in 1929. After coming to India, she worked as a teacher for several years. She took religious vows as nun in 1931 when her name was changed to Teresa, but every one called her Mother Teresa. Let us calculate Destiny number for Mother Teresa.

The destiny number here is 7 + 5 = 12 = 3. Observe the word ‘Mother’ has 34 which represents spiritual purity attained by effort and the word ‘Teresa’ has 23 which represents love for people. The final number 12 represents help from friends and groups. This number 12 = 1+2 = 3 represents creativeness. This is why Mother Teresa created her own society for destitute and poor and started doing service. She got a call within the call during 1946 to dedicate her life to the poor and needy.

Talent number or Life path number: This number represents the inner talents and abilities of the person and the lessons to be learned. It is the sum of date, month and year numbers in one’s birth date. For example, let us find the Talent number for Mother Teresa. Her date of birth is 26 – 8 – 1910.

Since the master number 11 is encountered in the year number, we should not reduce it to a single digit. The final talent number is 8 + 8 + 11 = 27 = 9. Whereas the 8s represent the executive abilities, the master number 11 represents work at spiritual level and the final number 9 represents sacrificing everything for the sake of helping others.

The Heart’s desire number or Soul urge number: This number represents the inner desire and motivation of the person. It is calculated by adding the numerical values of the vowels in a name. For ‘Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu’, the heart’s desire number is 5. This number 5 represents freedom of expression. For ‘Mother Teresa’, the heart’s desire number is 22 which is a master number as well as karmic number. 22 represents a big project of major importance to be handled which will have a lasting impact on the world.

Personality number: This number represents how other people will think of a person. It indicates the outer appearance or what the person shows to the society. The personality number is calculated by adding the numerical values of the consonants of a name. In case of ‘Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu’, the personality number is 2 which represents a person dressed in neatly and giving homely appearance. In case of ‘Mother Teresa’, the personality number is 8 which shows a person with a neat and executive dress.

The Ultimate number or maturity number: It indicates an underlying wish or desire that gradually surfaces around the middle age of a person. It represents a person’s awareness of his goals in life. The Ultimate number is calculated as the sum of Destiny number and Talent number reduced to a single digit or a master number. For example, in case of ‘Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu’, it is 9 + 7 = 16 = 7 which represents a person who is desirous of retiring from worldly affairs and think about spiritual and religious matters. The Challenge number: It represents a weakness or problem that the person has to face in the life. While calculating Challenge numbers, the master numbers (11 and 22) should also be reduced to single digits. The Challenge number is calculated from the date of birth of the person, as shown below:

Find the difference between month digit and day digit. For example, in case of Mother Teresa, 8 – 8 = 0. This is the first challenge number which Mother Teresa should face.

The next step is to find the difference between day digit and year digit. In case of Mother Teresa, it is 8 - 2 = 6. This is the second challenge.

Then find the difference between the first and second challenge numbers. It means, 2 - 0 = 2. This is the third challenge.

The fourth challenge number can be found from the difference between month digit and year digit. It is 8 – 2 = 6. This is her fourth challenge.
