Purpose and nature of astrological interpretation and practice:
When we assume our power to choose to act in certain way, we also undertake to accept responsibility for the consequences of our actions. We are to be responsible for being able to respond at our discretion, rather than being the helpless victims of the situation that we are in.
Purpose of using astrological tools is to make self-willed choices, realize our strengths, focus on our purpose in life, to evolve and grow to our full potential, to become who we are meant to be, to fulfill our selfhood, to individuate, to be unique.

Fate and Free Will:
If we believe that we are helplessly maneuvered in the hands of predetermined fate, then we will read a chart very differently. Freewill owners seek the challenges of resolutions to conflicts. They have confidence in the innate capacity to make choices, to grow and change, and reach their fullest potential.

The Transformational Astrology of Dane Rudhyar
The word 'crisis' is derived from the Greek word krino .It means "to decide" . Contemporary transits of planets and their relative aspects to their positions and other signs of houses in the natal chart indicate Crises of one sort or the other. These are , cross-roads in life , times of forced decision-making. Decision involves generating options, and choosing of option with a self-willed decision.
Dane Rudhyar, a renowned astrologer from the west, has defined this as freedom to choose, to make creative decisions at times of crises, as our ability to exercise our free will. Our freedom, he says, resides in our spark of divinity. It acknowledges and accepts the existence of pre-dispositions, of pre-determined character traits and of determinable or predictable outcomes for dynamic planetary interactions with the natal chart. But side by side ,it insists that we are free to exercise our options by free will.
So the credo for using astrology to make a decision involves an earnest prayer-
God, Goddess,
grant me the serenity
to accept the things
I have inherited with my past Karma and cannot change,
the courage
to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.
In gratitude to Rudhyar:
Rudhyar asserts that all predictive methods are "a glorified form of fortune-telling", The "humanistic astrologer " seeks to act as an intermediary, a focusing agent and interpreter, whose only function is to help another person to realize himself more fully and to become a "whole person", an integrated and multifarious individual, who is able to fulfill the essential purpose of his having been born (his individual destiny) at a particular time and in a particular social-planetary environment".

The task of the humanistic astrologer, he writes, is to "present to his client's consciousness a concrete, existential picture of what the chart signifies - the tensions to be resolved as well as the special abilities, the conflicts to be harmonized, the possibilities of disintegration to be avoided, and the opportunities that can be expected for individual fulfillment. In other words, he tries to assist the client in" how to be a whole person".

In this new light, the chart owner is able to see him/herself more objectively, to "see himself reduced to essentials". "Underneath the confusion of his everyday existence, he comes to discern a pattern of order. All his conflicting tendencies reveal themselves as complementary components of his integral personality. He sees himself whole, in structure and function".

Rudhyar does acknowledge the use of 'predictive' techniques, although he has much to say about how they should be used. While the birth chart is a symbol or mandala of our potential, the transits and progressions reflect the unfolding of that potential over time.

Rudhyar is quite adamant that transits and progressions do not reveal what will occur in terms of events, "but the sequential steps which it would be best for us to take in order to gradually actualize our innate potential and to fulfill the purpose which is defined by our birth chart"
'Hats off' to him!

Difference between human birth and animal birth is the free will awarded to human beings.
IThink of insects, birds, fish - they have no choice but to go through what life dishes out to them using their natural (Swabhava) instincts having no power of discretion and discrimination.
Human beings are different. We too, are dished out the results of our past karma. The difference is we are given opportunity to think, decide, and modify our inherent inclinations for better karma.
We find that there are identifiable instances where we can pin-point an experience as being predestined, one over which we had no control whatsoever. Our birth, accidents, breaks - which apparently defy any logic of 'why'. Then we find that there are also those moments when our own free-will seems to carry the day.

The irrevocable destiny is the resultant effect of the cardinal doctrine of karma ,the law of cause and effect in - strictly complying with the rule 'what you sow, so shall you reap.,.
Man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills. Our seemingly 'free' will is influenced by our natural attitudes, tendencies -summed up as our Sanskaras. Sanskara are imprinted in our intellect through repeated actions- Sowing good karma by choice can some times be against our inherent nature. Hence the importance in our ethical upbringing and developing ethically good habits. Having known these imprints, we can change them to our will, the way we want.

Vedic astrology is a great tool to learn the role of karma, destiny and free will in the interplay of our lives. Understand is the difference between responding to a situation and involuntarily reacting to a situation. Nature has endowed human beings with sufficient freedom to make or mar their own self.

Astrology brings out this fact that, since the spark of divinity is present in all of us; sincere efforts to perform actions in the right way will be rewarded by precasting destiny that helps us to gain liberation from birth and death, eternal thirst of material happiness.

Taking Decisions and Actions:
After exercising free will, comes the stage of executing the will effectively. In jyotish parlance, four houses are related with 'growth', the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th. These are known as the upachaya houses and are generally connected with earthy, practical areas in life, namely, personal efforts belong to the 3rd, ones livelihood and serving others through 6th, main occupation and general culmination of ones tasks from 10th and ones earnings and gains from 11th. However, other matters are also ascribed to these four houses (e.g., siblings, sicknesses/enemies, fame and elder sibling/friends are also studied from these 4 houses in a horoscope) and this must not escape ones mind while it focuses on a specific area within a chart

Will may be in right direction, but Decision can be wrong. The decision may be right but putting it to reality is not done efficiently. Result is the same.

Astrology like statistics . It is the science of generalization, is slightly esoteric, vague, cryptic. There is a lot to read between the written lines. Physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, psychological symptoms- implied and explicit- jostle for your attention and interpretation.
